Anthony DePalma on 9/11 Settlement & His Book "City of Dust: Illness, Arrogance and 9/11"

Anthony DePalma, author of City of Dust: Illness, Arrogance and 9/11:

"Amy Goodman, the long-time host of Democracy Now, invited me on her show to discuss the 21 MC 100 litigation settlement. The segment ran for about 12 minutes and we were able to touch on many important issues that I’ve raised in “City of Dust.” She wanted to know more about the roles that Christie Whitman and Rudy Giuliani played in the early stages of the disaster, and she criticized the early coverage of the ground zero hazards by The New York Times. That was before I was covering the environmental beat, and she had a point. If The Times and other media outlets had forced Whitman to be more specific about her statement that the “air was safe to breathe,” asking her where exactly it was safe, for whom it was safe and when, if they had forced her to be as specific about the ground zero hazards as the EPA usually is about the air quality warnings it puts out on ozone alert days, if they had asked her about the immediate dangers of the high silica content of the dust, which made breathing it like taking in airborne Drano, the cleanup would have unfolded in a far different way."

The 9/11 Hotel

Seven years after 9/11, this powerful documentary brings a fresh angle on the terrorist attack. It reveals the extraordinary stories of the people trapped in the 22-storey Marriott World Trade Center Hotel, which nestled beneath the twin towers. Up until now, these stories of luck, sadness, bravery and heroism have rarely been reported; this impressive program more than compensates.

The Marriot was one of New York's busiest hotels. At 8.45am on 11 September 2001, the hotel was at full capacity, with more than 1,000 people staying in its 825 rooms. While guests were finishing their breakfasts, working out in the gym or relaxing in the luxury pool, the hotel's tranquil environment was shattered by the roar of jet engines and the horror of falling and burning debris.

Initially it wasn't clear to hotel guests exactly what had happened. Some, unable to see the full extent of the carnage way above the hotel, assumed it was minor incident and that the emergency services would soon have things under control. In fact one American lawyer was so busy, preparing for an impending trial, that he stayed in his room.

By the time the second plane hit the South Tower at 9.03am, many hotel guests had managed to escape, but as the fires continued to burn out of control and the towers came crashing down, some guests and staff became trapped. Miraculously, 14 survived.

This documentary meets some of the survivors. They include a British family on holiday; a hotel receptionist and part-time actress whose actions would later turn her into an American hero, and the lawyer who ignored the commotion and his fire-fighter rescuer.

The program builds well, using archive footage and interviews with the survivors to build a harrowing picture of what it was like in the Marriot during 9/11. And it also reveals the part that a previous terrorist attack had to play in this extraordinary story.

Luke Rudkowski/Nico Haupt Double Feature!

Since it was too hot to go outside today, I whipped up two video edits in a comedy vein. It's a Luke Rudkowski of We Are Cry Babies NYC double bill featuring the transgressive humor of the one and only Nico Haupt. Enjoy! (Promotional consideration by the Millennium Hilton overlooking Ground Zero in lower Manhattan.)

First up is Attack of the Nico Beast. As Count Floyd of SCTV's Monster Chiller Horror Theater would say, "It's scary stuff!"

Our second feature is I Didn't Insult That Lady (you can skip to the punch line beginning at the 7:57 mark if you're so inclined).

Note:
The videos are presented in reverse chronological order. The “mustache incident” in the first video took place at Ground Zero in May of 2008 and the legal document being brandished is a restraining order taken out after NICO’s “insult” to Luke’s lady in the second video, the events of which happened in January 2008.

When Troofers Attack

Apparently Nico was trying to place a Hitler mustache (black piece of tape) on Sabrina, although he never really comes closer than about six inches to her face. Luke goes ballistic. Oddly, the cops watched this video (taped by Paula Gloria) of the incident and charged Sabrina and Nico, but not Luke. Update: Slow-mo replay clearly shows it was Sabrina and Luke Rudkowski who attacked Nico, not the other way around.

Dust to Dust: The Health Effects of 9/11

Just days after September 11, 2001, the Environmental Protection Agency assured the public that there should be no concern about any health hazards associated with exposure to smoke and debris in lower Manhattan. This disturbing documentary asks whether the EPA's pronouncement was based on science or politics. Now many of the first-responders who risked their lives within that toxic chemical soup are seriously ill or dying. Filmmaker Heidi Dehncke-Fisher and producer Bruce Kennedy reveal how 9/11's latest victims are America's forgotten heroes.

The Sundance Channel. 57 min. First shown on September 11, 2006.

Naudet Brothers: 911 Inside The World Trade Center

On the morning of September 11, 2001, brothers Jules and Gedeon Naudet were working on a documentary about a rookie New York City firefighter. Hearing a roar in the sky, Jules turned his camera upward--just in time to film the only existing image of the first plane crashing into the World Trade Center. In a fateful instant, Jules and Gedeon became eyewitnesses to the most shocking and defining incident of our time. With cameras rolling, the Naudets followed NYC firefighters into the heart of what would be known as Ground Zero. What emerged is an unforgettably powerful visual document and a stirring tribute to real-life heroes who, in their city's darkest hour, rose to extraordinary acts of courage and compassion.

Truthers Speak At Ground Zero

CHF from the JREF Forum:

On Saturday Aug 25th,[2007]... I headed down to Ground Zero for a chat with the truthers. I spent a good hour or so with these folks; some were polite, some were complete punks, and it was difficult at times to not get annoyed at hearing the same claims for the 500th time...
